How to obtain an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch Crash Log

We have a strict no-crashing policy at Regular Rate & Rhythm Software, but every once in a while software misbehaves.  A crash log will help us find out what happened, why it happened, and how to fix it for you.

When the app crashes, it leaves information, called a crash log, on your device. To get that information to us, please follow these steps:

Step 1

Sync your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad to iTunes. This will automatically copy the log from your device to your computer.

Step 2

Find the crash log(s) on your computer.  Here is where they’re located:

  • Mac OS X ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
  • Windows XPC:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/<DEVICE_NAME>
  • Windows Vista & Windows 7C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>

The log files' names start with the application name and have the extension “crash”. We prefer that you attach the file(s) to an email (easier for all involved), but if necessary you can also open them in a text editor and copy the text, then paste it into the email.

Step 3

Send us an email with as much detail as you can: what you were doing at the time of the crash, what was on the screen, etc.  Don’t forget to include the crash reports you found in Step 2 above!
