Rowmote Support

Feature request, bug report, or just something to say? Please email us at support@rowmote.com.

Please note that Rowmote only supports the applications listed on the main page; if you’d like to request support for controlling another application, please just let us know.

Rowmote Helper must be running on the computer to be controlled. If it’s running, double-clicking it should show a dialogue with the current version number, offering to quit the program.  If you quit Rowmote Helper manually, it won’t launch again until you tell it to do so; otherwise, Rowmote Helper will automatically launch when you log into your computer. Unless you are able to use a Bluetooth connection via Internet tethering, your iPhone or iPod Touch’s WiFi must be enabled in its Settings, and it must be connected to the same network as your computer.

Using Rowmote when you don’t have a wireless network: So you’re, for example, giving a presentation or staying in a hotel, want to use Rowmote, and don’t have a wireless network?  No problem - create your own! 1. Create a “Computer-to-Computer” network via the Create Network option in the Airport menu at the top of your computer screen. 2. Join the newly created network in Settings -> WiFi on your iPhone or iPod Touch. 3. Load Rowmote and connect. Voilá!  Bluetooth connectivity will work if you can enable Internet Tethering on your iPhone. This is not currently available to U.S.A AT&T customers without jailbreaking and unlocking the device, but it is available elsewhere in the world.  If you have tethering, just connect - Rowmote will “just work” :)

Firewall information: Rowmote uses port 5842. If you use the Mac OS X 10.5 or Mac OS X 10.6 firewall, just add Rowmote Helper to the allowed applications list. If you use Mac OS X 10.4 or some other firewall software, open port 5842 [Mac OS X 10.4 instructions].

“Rowmote doesn’t see my computer!” / Wireless networks: Some public, ‘guest’, and semi-public (e.g. corporate) networks don’t allow Bonjour traffic. Bonjour is the technology which Rowmote and other applications use for zero-configuration networking.  A free way to test this is to try out Apple’s free Remote software for controlling iTunes.  If that works, then Bonjour works on your network. If it doesn’t work, try creating a Computer-to-Computer network via the Create Network option in the Airport menu at the top of your computer screen. Then, join that network with your iPhone.  You’ll find that Rowmote and other programs, like Apple’s Remote program, can then work.  Ask your network administrator to enable Bonjour traffic if this turns out to be the problem.

Sleeping and waking your Mac: To put your Mac to sleep, while controlling any Apple application press and hold the play button for 3 seconds. (Please note that Plex will intercept this functionality and perform its own behavior if Apple remote functionality is ‘always running’).  To wake your Mac, just open Rowmote and let it connect. Waking requires the Mac be connected to a power source. Modern Macs running Mac OS X 10.6 can be woken via wireless or Ethernet; in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5, Ethernet (a network cable) is required. Also, the "Wake for network administrator access" option must be enabled in System Preferences -> Energy Saver.  It may be called “Wake for network access” or “Wake for Ethernet network access.” If it says “Ethernet” your computer supports waking only over a wired Ethernet connection and not over wireless.

Using Rowmote with multiple Apple TVs: Please see these instructions for how to configure your Apple TVs to peacefully coexist with Rowmote (and with any other program which accesses them by name).

Switching tabs in Safari: To switch tabs in Safari and to access other non-link buttons, enable “Press Tab to highlight each item on a webpage” under:
